Marble is a metamorphic rock that loses any fossils or other features during the recrystallization process. The classic swirls and veins in colored marble are actually impurities, such as clay, sand, iron oxides or chert. Synonymous with tradition and refined taste, marble’s extremely colorful patterns are often imitated. Artists translate marble into wallpaper, background patterns for computer displays, silk fabrics and even egg dyes.
